Nigeria: hundreds of airline passengers were stranded (March 4, 2012)

According to local Nigerian reporting, hundreds of airline passengers were stranded or had to revise travel itineraries due to the ongoing fuel shortages throughout the country on Friday and Saturday, March 2-3.
  • According to airlines, at no notice, it became difficult to acquire the necessary fuel in the appropriate time, and once acquired, the fuel was sold at exorbitant prices.
  • Two domestic terminals at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed Airport saw passengers become increasingly disgruntled as flights were delayed as many as three times before being cancelled outright.
  • Reports indicate that due to the situation, some passengers were forced to fly to other airports and continue their respective journeys by overland travel before arriving to their destinations.
  • The Assistant Secretary General of Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), Muhammed Tukur blamed the shortage and the high prices on the recent slashing of the nation’s fuel subsidy.
