Israel: Rocket fired from the Sinai towards Eilat no damage or casualties were reported (April 5, 2012)

On Thursday night April 5, a grad rocket exploded in southern Israel in the city of Eilat (approximately 290KM south of Tel Aviv). The rocket fell near a residential neighborhood in the western part of the city. Since the ousting of Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak, the Sinai Peninsula has become an operational base for many militant groups, both global such as al-Qaeda, and Gaza-based militants such as Hamas or the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC).  At this time none of the groups claimed responsibility for the attack. Later today, Sinai’s Governor denied that the rockets were fired from Egypt.

We assess that at this time this attack will not prompt a wide-scale escalation.

Travel to Eilat may continue, while adhering to all safety precautions regarding early warning sirens. In case a siren is heard, seek shelter in a protected area and remain in it for at least 20 minutes. Read More>>
