Egypt: Refrain from non-essential travel to Downtown Cairo as situation remains volatile(April 5, 2012)

Late Wednesday night, April 4, a fight broke out in Tahrir Square between ‘thugs’ and a group of people they had previously confronted. Several rounds of ammunition were shot in the air, but reports have not indicated any injuries or property damage. Many shops in the area closed, however, due to the gunshots.

Tahrir Square will also be the endpoint of a Salafi demonstration planned for tomorrow April 6, after Friday midday prayers. The organizers are supporting presidential candidate Sheikh Hazem Salah Abu Ismail.

As a general rule, non-essential travel to Cairo’s Downtown area should be avoided at this time. If you must visit the area, do so only during day time, and while avoiding the vicinity of iconic squares and governmental buildings, all of which still serve as potential locations for unrest. Travel to the Downtown area during the night time should be strictly avoided, due to the credible risk for violence, specifically in the vicinity of the aforementioned locales. Read More>>
