South Africa Alert: Practice vigilance near Rustenburg during planned Cosatu rally on October 27 (October 20, 2012 – 13:20 UTC)

The Congress of the South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) announced today October 20 that the group will organize a rally to “reclaim Rustenburg area from the forces of counter-revolution”. Leaders of the union are calling for all workers in the North West, Limpopo and Gauteng to attend the rally.

  • The city of Rustenburg (approximately 100 kilometers west of Pretoria) has been the site of multiple wildcat strikes in the mining sector, causing significant levels of unrest in the area.
  • On October 10, thousands of sacked miners marched to the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM) regional office in Rustenburg to relinquish memberships from the union. This march was dispersed forcefully by police.
