Iran: Election results likely to weaken Ahmedinajad’s stance in internal politics

After counting nearly 90% of the votes, it appears 75% of the seats in Iran’s next Majlis will be loyalists of the supreme leader Khamena’i. While the election results are not expected to have grave repercussions on the Islamic Republic in terms of foreign policy, internally Khamena’i once again proved his superiority and domination over the state affairs. Under these circumstances, the supreme leader will likely find it also easier to run his own candidate for the Presidential elections scheduled for next year as there is an apparent growing divide between him and current President Ahmedinajad.
