protests will be held in Beirut’s (March 3, 2012)

Please be advised

Both pro and anti-Assad protests will be held in Beirut’s Martyrs’ Square on March 4 at 13:00 local time.
  • Following the violence in Syria, Sunni cleric, Sheik Ahmed al-Asir called for a mass-protest and sit-ins in support of the rebels in Syria and Palestinians in Jerusalem.
  • In response, pro-Assad Lebanese are to simultaneously hold their own protests at Martyrs’ Square.
  • Lebanon’s Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said that protesters have the right to express their views on Sunday, but neither side has yet to receive permits for the march. Charbel has ordered government forces, including the military, to heavily deploy to the area in preparation for possible confrontations between the parties.
  • Sheik Asir said his followers should conduct themselves peacefully and go unarmed, however, he claimed pro-Assad elements, including March 8 parties, were interested in instigating confrontations and disrupting the planned march to Martyrs’ Square.
