Jordan: Electricity workers escalate strike, raise likelihood of powercuts (April 12, 2012)

Possibility of power outages has grown as employees of the Jordanian Electric Power Company (JEPCO) and the Central Electricity Generating Company (CEGCO) have escalated their open-ended strike. Electricity Workers Union (EWU) said yesterday April 10 that the union will stop replacing night shift workers who are not abiding by the strike, and will halt maintenance and refuelling of generators. According the EWU, the decision was taken after negotiations with the CEGCO management have failed to reach an agreement over demands for pay rise and full healthcare insurance. However, the Minister of Energy Qutaiba Abu Qura has assured that despite the strike and the escalation, there is no immediate risk for power outages.
