Egypt: What’s causing the latest unrest?

For the past several weeks, a controversial document proposed by the government for a set of “Supra-Constitutional Principles” has enraged political factions from both sides of the spectrum. Groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood as well as secular movements have each charged that the document is actually a ploy by the ruling military council to cement its authority into a future constitution before a new parliament can be elected. The unrest currently gripping Cairo began during peaceful, Brotherhood-led demonstrations on November 18, after which, revolutionary youth groups attempted encamp themselves at Tahrir Square. Since that time, back and forth battles have raged between security forces and protesters who are each vying for control of  iconic Tahrir Square.
